Short-Handed on a Metal Building Job? How to Add Crew Without Losing the Schedule

You bid the job with the crew you had. Then the schedule compressed, or two hands quit, or the GC pulled steel delivery three weeks forward — and the crew that was going to erect this building is short. This is the most common staffing problem in metal building erection, and the way most erectors solve it, calling around until somebody answers, is what turns a manpower problem into a quality problem. Here is what being short actually costs, what the real options are, and how to bring an outside crew on without burning the week you were trying to save.

How Erectors End Up Short

Almost nobody bids a job short on purpose. You bid with the crew you have, and then something moves. The most common cause is schedule compression: the GC recovers time somewhere upstream and pulls your steel delivery forward, so the eight weeks you priced becomes five and the crew that fit the original curve no longer fits.

The second cause is attrition, and it is getting worse. Experienced PEMB erectors are a small pool, and the hyperscale data center buildout has been pulling them out of general industrial work for three years running. When a good hand leaves in the middle of a job, you are not replacing him from a local ad.

The obvious cost is liquidated damages, and those are usually the smallest number in the stack. The expensive thing sitting idle is the crane. Your Options for Adding Hands

Pulling from your own other job is the first instinct and usually the worst one. You have not added capacity, you have moved the shortage to a project where the customer has not noticed yet.

Hiring direct is the right long-term answer and the wrong short-term one. Between sourcing, interviewing, background and drug screening, E-Verify, orientation, and getting the hand productive on your systems, you are three to six weeks out — longer than the problem you are trying to solve. And when the job ends you own the payroll.

The union hall works fast where you hold an agreement and the local has bodies. The caveat is skill match: a hall dispatching structural ironworkers will not necessarily send you people who have run a standing seam roof or set IMP with a vacuum lifter, and PEMB erection is its own trade.

1099 crews are the fastest and cheapest option on paper, and they carry the most exposure. If the crew works your schedule, on your site, under your foreman, with your equipment, the classification will not survive scrutiny — and the liability for workers' comp, back payroll taxes, and injury lands on you, not on them.
